الماضي المستمر (Past Continuous) يُستخدم للتحدث عن أفعال كانت مستمرة في وقت معين في الماضي. تخيل أنك تصف خلفية حدث ما — ماذا كان يحدث عندما وقع شيء آخر.
متى نستخدم الماضي المستمر؟
١. فعل كان مستمراً في وقت محدد في الماضي
- At 8 PM last night, I was watching TV. — في الساعة ٨ مساء أمس، كنت أشاهد التلفاز.
- Yesterday at 3 PM, she was studying for her exam. — أمس في الساعة ٣، كانت تدرس لامتحانها.
- This time last week, we were lying on the beach. — في هذا الوقت الأسبوع الماضي، كنا مستلقين على الشاطئ.
٢. فعل مستمر قاطعه فعل آخر (when)
الحدث الطويل المستمر = Past Continuous. الحدث القصير القاطع = Past Simple.
- I was having dinner when the phone rang. — كنت أتناول العشاء عندما رن الهاتف.
- She was walking home when it started raining. — كانت تمشي إلى المنزل عندما بدأت تمطر.
- We were sleeping when the baby cried. — كنا نائمين عندما بكى الطفل.
- He was driving to work when he saw the accident. — كان يقود إلى العمل عندما رأى الحادث.
٣. فعلان مستمران في نفس الوقت (while)
نستخدم while (بينما) للربط بين فعلين مستمرين في نفس الوقت:
- I was studying while my brother was playing video games. — كنت أدرس بينما كان أخي يلعب ألعاب الفيديو.
- She was cooking while he was watching TV. — كانت تطبخ بينما كان يشاهد التلفاز.
- They were talking while the teacher was explaining the lesson. — كانوا يتحدثون بينما كان المعلم يشرح الدرس.
٤. وصف أجواء الماضي (Setting the scene)
نستخدم الماضي المستمر لوصف ما كان يحدث كخلفية لقصة:
- The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and people were walking in the park. — كانت الشمس تشرق، والعصافير كانت تغرد، والناس كانوا يمشون في الحديقة.
- It was raining heavily. The wind was blowing strongly. Everyone was staying indoors. — كانت تمطر بغزارة. الرياح كانت تهب بقوة. الجميع كانوا يبقون في الداخل.
متى نستخدم Past Simple بدلاً من Past Continuous؟
- Past Simple = فعل كامل (بدأ وانتهى): I ate dinner at 8 PM.
- Past Continuous = فعل مستمر (كان في منتصفه): I was eating dinner when you called.
- الفرق: Past Simple يخبرنا أن الفعل تم. Past Continuous يخبرنا أن الفعل كان قيد التنفيذ.

أمثلة:
- I wasn't sleeping when you called. I was studying. — لم أكن نائماً عندما اتصلت. كنت أدرس.
- She wasn't listening to the teacher. — لم تكن تستمع إلى المعلم.
- They weren't playing football; they were playing basketball. — لم يكونوا يلعبون كرة القدم؛ كانوا يلعبون كرة السلة.
- It wasn't raining when we left. — لم تكن تمطر عندما غادرنا.
خطأ شائع:
لا تنسَ was/were في النفي:
- ❌ I not sleeping when you called. → ✅ I wasn't sleeping when you called.
- ❌ She no listening. → ✅ She wasn't listening.
- ❌ They not playing. → ✅ They weren't playing.
تذكر: Past Continuous يحتاج دائماً was/were!

مقارنة بين Past Simple و Past Continuous:

When + Past Simple (حدث قاطع)
when يتبعه عادةً Past Simple — الحدث القصير الذي قاطع الفعل المستمر:
- I was sleeping when the alarm rang. — كنت نائماً عندما رن المنبه.
- She was cooking when she cut her finger. — كانت تطبخ عندما جرحت إصبعها.
- We were driving when we saw the accident. — كنا نقود عندما رأينا الحادث.
While + Past Continuous (فعل مستمر)
while يتبعه عادةً Past Continuous — الفعل المستمر الثاني:
- While I was studying, my brother was playing. — بينما كنت أدرس، كان أخي يلعب.
- She called while we were having dinner. — اتصلت بينما كنا نتناول العشاء.
- While they were travelling, they met many interesting people. — بينما كانوا يسافرون، قابلوا الكثير من الأشخاص المثيرين للاهتمام.
نصيحة لحفظ when vs while:
- when = حدث قصير قاطع (Past Simple)
- while = فعل مستمر طويل (Past Continuous)
تذكر: when = نقطة، while = خط مستمر.
- ❌ I was sleeping while the phone rang. (رن الهاتف = حدث قصير — استخدم when)
- ✅ I was sleeping when the phone rang.
